About The Event

Drs. Mosley, Walkes, and McKen will facilitate an interactive workshop titled, “How the Wail of the Blues & the Cacophony of Jazz Culminate in the Healing Communal Ritual of ‘Sinners’.” This workshop will explore the powerful themes of intra-communal healing inherent in the musical genres of blues and jazz, connecting their origins to traditional African rituals. This workshop will delve into the historical and cultural contexts of blues and jazz, highlighting how these musical forms served as expressions of pain, resilience, and ultimately, healing for African American communities. We will examine the ways in which the emotional depth of the blues and the improvisational yet complex nature of jazz provided channels for processing trauma and fostering spiritual and communal well-being.
